Chapter 17

The office of Rittider has become synonymous with honor. Only those with the highest morals, weapon skills, and initiative are accepted into our ranks. Carda set the standard, and we have upheld it since. Welcome to the life of the elite.

HEST SQUIRMED IN HIS seat, trying not to let his gaze wander around the council room. Would Bennen ever finish this report? A knock at the door made the man pause for a moment, but when he saw it was Finn, he kept going while the lad made his way to Hest.

“Moregot,” he whispered, “Bryan has returned with news.”

With a nod, Hest stood. “If you’ll excuse me, an urgent matter has come up.”

He didn’t wait to answer the questions that erupted. Sydur followed him out the room, Goshkeah tailing them both in his ever-present position as Hest’s shadow.

“What is it, boiwith?” Sydur hurried his steps to keep up with Hest’s longer strides.

“Bryan’s back.”

“I’m glad I came along then.”

Finn led them to a comfortable room near the main entrance. Bryan stood his mouth full of food and bowed.

“Sit; relax and eat.” Hest took a place next to his friend and motioned to a third seat for Sydur.

With the door secured behind Finn, Hest leaned forward. “You have no idea how relieved I am to see you here. We worried you’d been found out or killed.”

“Nay,” Bryan said around his mouthful of bread. “All’s well. For me, at least. You, I think, will have your hands full,” he said gravely.

“What’ve you learned?”

Swallowing, Bryan nodded. “As you thought, Moregot, the Aeguskey are involved. The one in charge reminds me of the leader we met in Rudone when I still worked for Liam.”

Hest nodded. He hadn’t been sure they would make it out of that meeting alive, and Bryan’s loyalty had been put into an immediate crisis. Hest was grateful that his friend had chosen the right side, despite the threats they’d faced that moonstep.

Bryan didn’t falter; perhaps he was more clear of his past than Hest was. “Anyway,” he went on, “this new leader has a single goal, and he’s not letting the fiahat dissuade him.”

Hest’s heart sped up as his dream replayed in his mind, and he saw again Nwa’s vengeful smile.

“What is his goal?” Sydur folded his hands.

“He wants the king, plain and simple. He’s leaving all else to the fiahat, but has pressed their pledge that the king and anyone close to him will be delivered to him to deal with personally.” He frowned. “Why would an Aeguskey leader be after you, Moregot? Or is he thinking of Athair?”

“Nay, he wants me. ‘Tis Ikpu’s son.”

“Ikpu?”

“The Aeguskey at Rudone; ‘tis his son, Nwa. The boiwith watched me kill his father and is after revenge.”

“I don’t understand how he would have found the fiahat to join him. This doesn’t make sense. Aeguskey is many furlongs from Muintir, but their leader—Nwa, if ‘tis him, had several companies with him and was only gathering fiahat as they’d trickle in.
